A curio of sorts, Jerry Goldsmith’s unused score for the flop Timeline, released as “Music Inspired by the Film.”
Interview with Richard Donner
Interview with Richard Donner from Music from the Movies about what went wrong, and why this score wasn’t used: In an exclusive interview with producer and director Richard Donner for Issue 41 of Music from the Movies Magazine, editor Rudy Koppl discussed Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the film Timeline. Here is a web exclusive extract from the forthcoming article. Donner: In Timeline, to be honest with you, I started with Jerry Goldsmith, who I love dearly and who received an Academy Award for the last picture we did together, The Omen. It was early on when I told him what I wanted, I really was very specific in the terms of the music, I wanted to stay away from action scoring and just wanted it to be a very strong orchestral piece that would carry the film. Jerry understood it totally. Little by little he played it to us, I loved it, it was just great. Then I laid it up to the picture for the first time and I realised that I had really screwed up, that I was really hurting the picture. What I really needed was a lot of drive, a lot of action, and a lot of music that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I went back to Jerry and I said, “I really screwed up, I would appreciate it if we could talk and change this.” He said, “What kind of changes are you talking about?” and I told him. He said, “Listen Dick, I love you. If you tell me to do it, I’ll do it, but I really feel what you asked for I’ve given you.” I said, “True! It’s totally one hundred percent true, I love what you’ve done.” Then he said, “If you make me do it I’ll do it, but I’d rather not.” It was heartbreaking and he was right. He had done a phenomenal job and here I was asking him to change it, to go back and do the whole thing over again. It wasn’t fair to Jerry. He bowed out, I allowed him out because I respect him so. That was very difficult because I respect him, I love him, and he did a phenomenal job on the piece of music that he did. I say that without reservation and it’s too bad nobody will ever hear that track. Koppl: You never know, maybe someday years from now it could be released. Donner: I would love it, I would give anything to have that happen. The director, the producer, led him astray in the end result, because quiet honestly, what Jerry composed for Timeline was really magnificent and it was my call. His score for Timeline is extraordinary, it’s so big, it’s so beautiful.Review from Filmtracks
